Mile of Pennies York Street 1920's

Another early photograph at the bottom of York Street. This time what looks like a money raising event. The Dick Turpin looking characters appear on other photographs from the Torchlight. So this must of been part of the celebrations from that time. This photograph would of been taken either in 1923 or 1924.After the first World War local people decided it would be appropriate to purchase Clitheroe Castle as a War Memorial. This would be one of the many events for the fund raising which took place in those two years. The shop at the time had just 3 sections and was known as the 'United Building' for what ever reason. What is 48 York Street today does not exist on this photograph. The building was extended later on.On the far right you can just see some kind of wooden cabin that is today in place of 48 York Street.
