An early photograph showing the Sawley Arches before they were taken down earlier on last century.These two arches were built from the stone taken from the ruins of Sawley Abbey after Henry 8th had finished with it.The ruins of the Abbey are just across the road from the arches.Sawley Abbey was founded in 1147 by William de Percy.The first monks that came to Sawley Abbey were from Fountains Abbey.
